Gerald Ford served as the 38th president of the United States from August 1974 to January 1977. In October of 1973, Ford, who was House Minority Leader at the time, became vice president as the Watergate scandal was unfolding. Then Vice President Spiro Agnew, serving under President Richard Nixon, resigned and then pleaded no contest to criminal charges of tax evasion and money laundering. When Nixon resigned the following summer of 1974, Ford assumed the presidency. He is the only politician to serve as both Vice President and President without being elected by the electoral college.
