Juneteeth is short-hand for June 19th, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the US. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued two years earlier in 1863, many troops wouldn't learn of their freedom until June 19th, 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas, one of the last Confederate states, to announce that freedom was at hand.
