Rosie the Riveter is the central image of the 1940s campaign to recruit women to defense industries during World War II. From 1940 to 1945, the percentage of women in the workforce increased from 27% to nearly 37%. Today Rosie continues to serve as an icon for American feminism and the empowerment of women.
